Grip Strength as Measured by the Jamar Dynamometer for Normal Korean

Abstract
The grip strength ratio between major and minor hand probably remains constant throughout the working life of a man. It is this ratio that is most helpful in evaluation of grip loss on an individual basis. The author measured the grip strength for 692 normal males and 447 normal females to investigate the ratio between the major and minor hand grip for post-injury evaluation of grip loss and to assess the result of rehabilitation treatment.
All subjects were tested with the Jamar dynamometer in a uniform manner, using an alternating series of one trial on each hand; if more than one was taken, the highest value was used.
The men averaged 82.83 pounds in the major hand and 77.85 pounds in the minor hand. The average difference was 7.79 pounds (9.4 percent). The average major/minor grip strength ratio was 1.024. Twenty-eight percent of the men tested had grip strength reading in the minor hand equal to or greater than those of the major hand. Grip strength was proportional to height and weight up to 182cm and 75kg. Grip strength was directly proportional to age up to 37years, and inversely proportional thereafter.
The relationship for the grip strength found in the male population probably are the same as in the female population, except for smaller grip strength means. The female averaged 47.92 pounds in the major hand and 42.82 pounds in the minor hand. The average difference was 6.64 pounds. The average major/minor grip strength ratio was 1.08. Twenty nine point eight percent of the persons tested had grip strength readings in the minor hand equal to or greater than those of the major hand. Grip strength of tested female was proportional to height up to 162.5cm and 65kg. The grip strength was directly proportional to age up to 40 years, and inversely proportional thereafter.
